An Open Source Volumetric Pixel Array by Pete Thornbury & Jennifer Deafenbaugh
This talk will cover the design of our openly available plans for fabricating and animating content on a 3D LED pixel array, made with inexpensive, accessible materials and tools. It has been designed for a small hobbyist laser cutter, it uses readily available WS2812 LEDs, and it can be driven with DMX via an inexpensive controller. Our solution, in its simplest form, packs down small enough to bring in a small suitcase, and can expand to a height of several meters.
We’ll touch on how the array is mapped, show how we created some simple animations using RayTK in TouchDesigner, and discuss a few of the technical aspects of the project.
